A repositioned race, a rediscovered reputation<\/p>\n\n

Long held on a Wednesday, Gent\u2013Wevelgem occupied a strategic spot between the two great Sunday Monuments. In 2011, the UCI reorganized its calendar and elevated it to the rank of the major weekend classics. Since then, it has started in Middelkerke, on the Belgian coast, under its official name: In Flanders Fields<\/em>\u2014a somber tribute to the World War I battlefields the peloton crosses during the race. <\/p>\n\n

The Franco-Belgian route crosses the agricultural plains of Flanders: constant false flats, sometimes broken roads, ever-present crosswinds. The real selection begins with the bergs. <\/p>\n\n

The cobbles represent less than 6 km in total, but all uphill, including the Kemmelberg and its 22% gradient. Enough to decimate the peloton. <\/p>\n\n

Even before the first berg, it’s the wind that makes the first cut. Echelons opened in the first 100 kilometers are already fatal for those poorly positioned.
